This week Arctic class are focusing on column subtraction in math, thinking about place value and exchanging. To support our workings out and prove our answers we have been using dienes. We have been securing our understanding of when an exchange is needed by physically exchanging 1 ten for 10 ones using dienes.

Alongside using dienes we have been supporting each other (following brain, book, buddy, boss) and discussing the steps we need to take to solve the calculation. The children have used support or challenge whilst watching their buddy demonstrated the method they used at the front of the class.

Throughout this week we will continue to secure our understanding of column subtraction, particularly when to exchange and how to show this in our workings.
