Coral Reef Weekly Reflect and Review

9 June 2023 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT))

We have become fully immersed in our new topic 'Bug's Life' this week. The children have been really keen to share their knowledge about insects and as part of our topic work learnt about how to identify an insect? I wonder if your child can tell you?

The children discovered that Slugs, Snails, and Spiders are not insects, can your child remember why? The children completed some wonderful observational drawings of insects, looking closely at their different parts and learning the names of the parts.  The children wrote labels and captions to accompany their drawings.

On our art table the children have been busy creating spiral snail patterns and designs using chalk pastels on dark coloured paper and the results are really effective!

During our maths sessions the children have been counting in steps of five and ten and identifying the next multiple when playing games. They have been using 2D shapes to create pictures and using coloured connecting cubes to replicate patterns and shapes and using positional language to describe the positions of the cubes such as 'on top' 'next to' so that their partner could copy it.

In Drawing Club we have been focusing on the amusing story 'Super Worm' and the children have enjoyed drawing the main character and taking their drawings on an imaginative adventure for example drawing other things that the worm could turn into and the children had some great ideas!

Our 'Write Stuff' writing sessions have been centred around the book 'Katie and The Sunflowers' and the children have been writing sentences containing exciting action words. We will continue with this book next week.

We have also been enjoying the sunny weather in our garden, especially playing parachute games! Now that the weather is warmer we expect all children to come to school wearing sunscreen and a hat and don't forget to bring in a water bottle!

Next week will will be learning about habitats and creating bug hotels inside empty milk bottles. Please can your child bring in an empty plastic milk bottle by Wednesday. We are also asking for donations of recycling materials, such as cereal boxes, tubes and pots.

    Have a lovely sunny weekend
