Coral Reef Weekly Reflect and Review29 September 2023 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT)) |
This week the children have been captivated by the traditional story 'The magic Porridge Pot' some of the children included elements of the story in their own storytelling and role playing.
The Children even learnt how to make porridge in their own little porridge pot. Some of children had never eaten porridge before and were brave when tasting it, others weren't too keen to try it.
Our 'Drawing Club' sessions have seen the children using their imagination to draw things to go in the old lady's potion and there were some fantastic ideas, from slimy slugs to stinky socks!
In our Maths sessions the children have been developing their subitising skills- subitising is the ability to recognise how many in a set without counting. The children have been able to explain what they see and how they see it when subitising amounts 1-5. The children have also been busy sorting objects by different sorting rules such as colour, size and shape and they even thought about the ways that we could sort ourselves.
In phonics the children have continued to learn more sounds and they have been working really hard to make simple words using magnetic sound tiles; using 'Fred Talk' to say the sounds and blend them to read the word. Please continue to support your child in reading and writing the sounds, a little practise each day will make all the difference. To ensure progress we expect the children to be able to recognise the sounds quickly as this will help them with their reading and writing.
On Wednesday we went to the 'Dough Disco' and had lots of fun moving our dough in different ways to music. This helps to develop the children's hand and finger strength.
Next week we will be thinking about the story 'The Gingerbread Man'. The children will have the opportunity to decorate their own Gingerbread Man (Allergies will be catered for) and they will develop skills in using split pins to create a moving Gingerbread Man.
We are also excited to welcome the wonderful Oxford Storytelling Museum in to see us with their 'Storytelling Suitcase' full of props to help in the retelling of some Fairy Tales. The children are really looking forward to their visit. Thank you to those parents who have already paid for this visit and our wonderful trip to the Theatre in December. The total cost of these experiences is £16.00. If you are having difficulty paying via Pupil Asset please send cash in a named envelope.
Have an enjoyable weekend
