Coral Reef Reflect and Review23 February 2024 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT)) |
The children have enjoyed being back at school this week and have quickly settled into the new term. We introduced our new Topic for the term called ‘Wild Things’
We have been joined by a mischievous monster who has been leaving us messages and making lots of mess in our classroom when we haven’t been there!
This week we have been learning all about maps. The children have learnt what a map is and look at different types of maps. They particularly enjoyed looking at a map of Cowley and locating where our school was and looking for their road if they lived nearby. Each child has designed their own imaginary map which they will recreate in 3D, using clay, next week.
In Maths the children have been adding one to numbers and looking at number sentences to represent this calculation. They have been practising finding all of the number bonds to five (these are the two number friends which when added together make five) The children need to know these securely by the end of the Reception year. The children have also been using the part whole model to split numbers (the whole amount) in different ways (parts).
In Drawing Club the children have been thinking about the classic story ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ and they have learnt lots of new and exciting vocabulary linked to the story such as ‘evade’ and ‘navigate’ and are becoming more confident at writing sentences to accompany their drawings.
Where possible we listen to the children reading one to one in school but it is equally important that you make time for the children to read their Oxford Owl/ Reading Buddy ebooks as well as their book bag reading book at home. Please don’t feel like they have to read a whole book in one sitting, just a couple of minutes each time, when you can, will make all the difference.
WE NEED YOUR RECYCLING! The children love to create with tubes, boxes and pots so please save and bring in your recycling for us!
As scientists next week the children will be investigating trees. As artists the children will be creating 3D maps using clay. Our story focus will be ‘Not Now Bernard’.
World Book day is on Thursday 7th March and children can bring in their favourite story, wear their pyjamas or a story character costume but please don’t spend money on a costume if you don’t already have something.
On Friday 8th March at 1.30 we are inviting all of the children’s mums/significant female figures to join their child for a Mother’s Day Tea. We will be sending out invites next week, please let us know if you will be able to attend so that we can ensure there is enough drinks and cakes for everyone!
You are invited to a parent Maths and Finance workshop in school:
Do you find maths tricky and struggle to support your child with their maths homework at home? Or find managing money and finances a challenge? If you are aged 19 and over and live in Oxford, we are offering parent workshops to support you. The sessions will be run by friendly faces from the St Frideswide team. Please complete this google form, email the office@stfrideswides.co.uk or speak to Menna or Ria on the main gate at the end of the day.
Have a great weekend
