Explorers Weekly Reflect and Review26 April 2024 (by Sereeta Raj-Singh (Sereeta)) |
Another busy week!
We began the week by celebrating world Earth day. The children learnt about how we can take care of nature and the natural environment. The children were asked if they would make one change what would it be?
In Maths Discovery have been working really hard and have shown great perseverance skills whilst completing SATs style questions based on ratio and proportion as well as calculating angles in a diagram. Please support your child to continue their learning at home to help them achieve their very best.
Cook has been really hard on improper fractions, adding and subtracting as well as division and multiplication.
Year 5s have been measuring and drawing angles accurately.
In English we continued with our unit about Ancient Greece. The children have written some amazing sentences for their detailed timeline. The children are working incredibly hard to pay close attention to the use of their grammar and punctuation, identifying word classes and then applying this to their writing.
They also had to recreate an Ancient Greek Democracy whereby they worked in teams and discussed the following topics; Women should be allowed to vote, 30 ships should be built incase of war and All debts should be cancelled. They then presented their debate to the rest of the class where they all posed a really interesting debate.
During the topic the children have learned some amazing facts about the school life of the children in Ancient Greece. Be sure to ask your child the subjects which were taught, the size of the classroom and the correct terminology for the word 'school’ in Ancient Greece. We also researched about Alexander the Great by using sources of information to form a testable hypothesis about the past.
Some children had the great opportunity to go to Magdalen college and meet the author AF Steadman. They had a day full of quizzes and came away with some brilliant tips on how to become an author.
The children were very fortunate to have received 12 books which have been signed for the school; however, three children took along their own personal copies which also got signed.
The children were commented on how beautifully they sat and listened throughout the day and were praised for their engaged participation.
Next week:
In English we will continue our sentence stacking for our detailed timeline. We will be focusing on using the following writing techniques; using complex sentences, possessive apostrophes, personification and cohesive devices.
During maths year 6 will continue with gap filling. Cook class will be focusing on decimals.

In topic the children will investigate and interpret the past by making an comparison and looking at the similarity and differences, about how the Olympic games have changed since they were first held
