Coral Reef Reflect and Review17 May 2024 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT)) |
After using ten frames to work out if we had enough pots and sunflower seeds the children set to work estimating how many spoonfuls of compost we would need to fill each pot, then they each planted a sunflower seed.
Over the coming weeks we will be using our maths skills and knowledge to compare and measure our sunflowers and as scientists we will be talking about and documenting the changes we see.
The children have also been developing their reasoning skills; using ten frames to help them to notice and talk about why an amount/number is odd or even- can it go into equal groups, can it be shared or paired? The children are doing really well with this. In other Maths the children have explored addition and subtraction problems using objects, recognising that numbers and amounts increase when adding and decrease when subtracting as we are taking away from that number.
In our provision we have enjoyed looking at bugs in resin on our light up screen and we have been collecting and pressing flowers with our flower press. Some of the children have enjoyed creating cards and artwork with the pressed flowers.
We learnt about the life cycle of a butterfly and ladybird and talked about the similarities and differences between them.
Our caterpillars have now all turned into cocoons and Helen has carefully transported them to our butterfly net. We are really hoping that they will transform into Butterflies next week. If they do the children will be able to help to release them into our garden!
In Drawing Club we have been drawing and writing about The Woolly Bear Caterpillar and in our Write Stuff sessions we have been learning what a Non- Fiction text is and learning how to write a report/factfile about Bugs using exciting language such as ‘delicate, vivid, magnificent’.
Next week will be our Religious Education focus week and our ‘Big Question’ will be ‘What can we learn from stories?’ Across the week we will be looking at stories from the Sikh, Muslim and Christian faith.
We will be observing our Sunflowers and the Caterpillar Cocoons, noticing any changes.
As artists we will be creating butterflies with paint and ink.
As writers we will be continuing our Non-Fiction writing based on ‘The Big Book of Bugs’
As Mathematicians we will be continuing to practice subtracting amounts and beginning to think about shapes.
BAKE SALE: On Friday we will be having a bake sale, after school as part of our PSHE learning based around fund-raising. The children will be busy cooking up some delicious treats to sell so remember to bring your pennies!
Calling all significant males- don’t forget to sign up for our special Forest school session on Friday 14th June. Sign up sheet available on the gate. If you are not able to attend, please don’t worry, your child will be able to take part in some fun activities in our classroom.
