    Coral Reef Reflect and Review

14 June 2024 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT))

We have been really creative this week combining different mediums to create artwork, learning how to join the mediums together by tying, using glue and tape and creating different effects with fine tip pens and graphite pencils.

The children have enjoyed making observational drawings of seashells, weaving fish and creating 3D  jellyfish which are now proudly displayed in our classroom.

This week our topic session was focused around Eid. The children learnt that Eid ul-Adha means 'festival of sacrifice' Some of the children shared some of the ways that they would be celebrating with their families and they watched a video of a family celebrating. Afterwards the children created a sheep themed biscuit to remind the children that some Muslims sacrifice a sheep and share the meat with family and those less fortunate.

As brave writers the children have continued writing sentences linked to the 'Tiny Seed' story and have been contributing their own vocabulary suggestions to enhance their sentences.

As Mathematicians the children have been using 2D shapes to make tessellated pictures as well as creating shapes from shapes and describing the position of the shapes. The children have also been  revisiting doubling and halving numbers to 10 and the number bonds to 5. It would be really helpful if you could support your children to practise their number bonds to 5 so that they can recall these quickly. The Number bonds to 5 are: 5+0, 4+1, 3+2, and then these equations reversed, 0+5, 1+4, 2+3.

We have been enjoying lots of time outside, and go out in all weathers. The weather is unseasonably cool and wet so please ensure your child has a light jacket or rain coat to wear outside. Hopefully warmer weather is on it's way!

A huge thank you to all the dads, granddads and uncles who joined us for our Special Father's Day Forest School Sessions today,  we know that it isn't always easy getting time off work so we hope you enjoyed it!

Next week the children will be using an underwater camera to take photos in our water tray and we will be looking at the images they capture. We will be deepening our knowledge of creatures who live in the ocean through non fiction texts and watching live streams from under the sea. As Geographers we will be finding out about coastal places and comping Oxford with a seaside town, looking at similarities and differences and looking at maps.

In Drawing Club we will be drawing and writing about the Story 'The Fish Who Could Wish' and in Write Stuff we will be composing and writing sentences linked to 'The Rainbow Fish' story.

As artists we will be creating Japanese fish prints with real fish! And decorating shells using felt tip pens and paints.
