Explorers Weekly Reflect and Review28 June 2024 (by Sereeta Raj-Singh (Sereeta)) |
Summer is finally here!
During gathering on Monday, we discussed Euro 2024 football. We looked at all the different countries involved and what it means to be the host city. The children were asked to think about all the qualities which are required within teamsport. We understand for any sport to be played to its best potential, all the players are required to play fairly and ensure they have good listening skills.
During tutor time, St Freds has spent a lot of time discussing how we are feeling about our transition days, and thought about different strategies to support our feelings and emotions as well as how we can be best prepared for the day.
During our big write, the children had to write a narrative based on a picture prompt image. All of the stories included dialogue and a range of punctuation. There were a number of different stories such as: the cursed island, crash landing and even some about ghosts! Be sure to ask your child what they based their story on.
As artists, we have begun to draw our self portraits by using a variety of techniques to
add interesting effects such as: reflections, shadows and direction of sunlight.
The children had another brilliant session with Oxford song on Thursday and have almost composed the last set of lyrics.
In Year 5, the children have been developing their knowledge of negative numbers. We have looked at where they are used in everyday life, explored number lines and counting through 0.
As writers, we have been developing our sentence writing, exploring fronted adverbials and short sentences for effect whilst developing our use of higher level vocabulary, to create diary entries.
As theologians, we have been studying Judaism. We have been looking at forgiveness, where we had great discussions about when things don't go as we'd hoped, when we need to say sorry, and when we need to forgive. We discussed what this looks like, and how this impacts us and the people around us. We then moved on to explore Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year celebrations and what these include, creating our own symbolistic celebration table.
Next week:
Discovery class have their big performance at Magdalen college school on Tuesday 2nd July. Please make sure to check your emails, for all the information about the show and continue encouraging your child to practise their lines.
On Monday, the children will be joining in with an Access art draw-along, via a zoom link at 10.00am. During this time, the children will be taken through a number of drawing exercises, which will culminate in them making a final drawing. Can we ask the children to bring in a small object which is meaningful to them? This can not be anything digital but can be a soft small toy, a memento or a book ect. Please can all objects be brought in for Monday 1st July 2024.
In English, the children will continue their last bit of sentence stacking before planning their adventure stories.
During maths, we will continue with our unit of bakery, whilst comparing quantities and calculating what is the best value for money.
As historians, we will build an overview to compare some of the times studied with those of other areas of interest around the world. Whilst looking at the Mayan’s emblem glyphs the children will create their own emblem glyphs thinking about the attributes of their community.
As geographers we will analyse statistics and other information in order to draw
clear conclusions about locations. As we look at the dangers posed by climbing Mount Everest such as; lack of oxygen, altitude of sickness and frostbite.
Year 5, will be looking at measures: comparing and converting units, using both metric and imperial units.
As writers we will be continuing to work on our sentence writing as we develop our diary entries based on those of Scott, as they raced to be the first to the south pole (which they were beaten to, just days before).
We will continue to be theologians, adding to our knowledge of Judaism as we look at Yom Kippur and how this is important to the lives of Jewish children.
The children will also begin exploring pulleys and gears in design and technology, completing research into how these work before designing and making our own products the following week.
