Coral Reef Reflect and Review28 June 2024 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT)) |
We have had another lovely sunny week in the Coral Reef and the children have enjoyed some sensible time in the sun where the children have enjoyed snack in our shaded hut and lots of water refreshments.
This week the children have been learning about plastic pollution in our oceans and in particular the Great Pacific Garbage Patch which we located on a world map to be in the North Pacific Ocean. Some of the children were already so knowledgeable about plastic pollution and the threat it can cause to sea creatures and their habitats. They even shared their understanding of recycling and why it is important. As part of our learning the children looked at the story 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley' in the story Stanley thought he was a Jellyfish but in fact he was a plastic bag!
As artists the children used recycled bottle top lids to create ocean based art work and there were some really imaginative ideas from whales to turtles. The children have also been learning to create designs on painted plastic bags and printing their designs on paper.
As Poets and musicians the children enjoyed singing the poem/song 'I had a little turtle' and taking turns to play percussion instruments to the pulse of simple songs.
As writers we continued to write sentences linked to 'The Rainbow Fish' story remembering to use our collected word in our sentences as well as capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. The children are becoming such confident writers and we are really proud of their efforts.
Next week we will be thinking about the story 'The Snail and The Whale' and writing postcards and 'The Odd Fish' where will will continue to embed our learning of plastic pollution and continue learning how we can take care of our world.
As artists we will be creating 3D shells from cardboard and creating our own shell inspired foam prints.
We will be making friendship bracelets, talking about what makes a good friend and remembering the importance about being gentle towards each other.
