    Autumn week 2

The highlight of this week was the trip to the Ashmolean. The children did a fantastic job at representing the school and really enjoyed exploring the Egyptian galleries: the temple, hieroglyphics and, of course, the mummies were all firm favourites.

The trip supported our current focus to helping the children develop an overview of world history and describe characteristic features of the past, including ideas, beliefs, attitudes and the experiences of men, women and children. This week we made our own names in hieroglyphics and learnt more about life in ancient Egypt.

In English, aligning with our history topic, we’re looking at the book: Secrets of a Sun King. The children are working towards writing their own diary based on the events in the book. As we move forward our English lessons will concentrate on teaching the children techniques to craft interesting and varied sentences.

In Maths we continue looking at Place Value. It’s vital that children have a solid understanding of how 10s link to 100s and recognise that numbers are made up of (and can be partitioned into) 1000s, 100s, 10s and 1s.

    Maths home learning this week:
Indian and Pacific: WhiteRose Workbooks p3-6

    Arctic: WhiteRose Workbooks p7-9

Sumdog: If your child can remember their Sumdog username and password encourage them to login and take a look at the additional challenges that have been set for each year group. Don’t worry if they don’t remember their logins, we’ll make them available to you.

Next week: We’ll start thinking about creating our song for the Oxford Song project. We’ll be developing a theme or story and capturing short sets of lyrics using our Ashmolean visit as inspiration.

Thursday, 2.45 - 3.45, is the Oceans parents workshop. Please come along so we can introduce ourselves properly and provide you with information on what’s happening in school and how you can best support your child’s learning.
