Explorers Reflect and Review4 October 2024 (by Beth Taylor (Beth)) |
What a busy week!
There has been lots going on in Explorers this week!
On Tuesday, we had a visit from Earth Science, with each class completing a workshop on Volatile Volcanoes! They showed us a variety of experiments that showed how volcanoes erupt, and why they erupt in different ways. We discussed the differences between the types of eruptions, classified different rock types found by volcanoes, and even got to try on a suit used by those studying volcanoes up close.
On Wednesday, Endeavour were invited to a maths challenge morning at Magdalen School. Here we got involved in a range of problem solving activities and challenges with other schools.
Over the rest of the week, as mathematicians we have been looking at addition and subtraction, with year 6 working through the Big Maths steps and year 5 using our knowledge of place value to support addition and subtraction.
As writers, year 6 have been writing persuasive letters to the Tolkien Society, to ask permission for us to perform "The Hobbit - The Opera". Year 5 have been writing their own versions of the stories they have been looking at over the last few weeks and will be editing these at the beginning of next week.
In Topic, Discovery and Endeavour have been geographers, looking at the advantages and disadvantages of living near a volcano. Beagle and Aegean have been looking at cheese, as part of design technology, with Beagle making their own this afternoon.
Next week, Discovery and Endeavour will be moving onto Science - looking at adaptation and evolution. To support this Endeavour will also be moving on to look at the book "The Moth" in English. Discovery will be continuing their English work based on Everest, and Beagle and Aegean will begin to look at non-fiction, with a piece on life-cycle. As Mathematicians we will be continuing with Addition and Subtraction.
On Wednesday 9th, we will be going down to St Mary and St John’s church (Cowley Road) for our annual harvest celebration. Any long-life food items that you would like to donate would be gratefully received.
Homelearning
As per the notice sent out earlier this week, we are aware of the problems with sumdog. We are working to get this rectified as soon as possible. Please do not try to log in until we have let you know that this has been sorted.
All children should be reading for at least 15 minutes each day: Discovery and Endeavour using Reading Plus; Beagle and Aegean using their reading books etc.
Maths homelearning this week is as follows:
Discovery - pages 10-13
Endeavour – Big Maths sheet
Beagle – White Rose sheet (that will be handed out on Monday – we had too much fun making cheese this afternoon).
Have a great weekend.
