The week when we all turned into frogs!
There has been much excitement around our focused storybook this week. What's in The Witches Kitchen? is a magical pop-up book in which a witch has hidden a trick and a treat in her magical kitchen cupboards! Which one we found depended on how we opened the doors. Whether it was frogspawn or popcorn, lollipops or rabbit plops, there were hilarious rhymes that we discovered, and at the end, there was a scary surprise! The book inspired some fantastic drawings and writing from the children and we learnt new vocabulary such as cackle, slimy and gruesome!
Our home corner had also turned into the witches' kitchen and instead of yummy food, there were bugs, snakes, spiders and colourful potion bottles for us to play with.
During our science topic time, the children combined reactive ingredients to create a magical, fizzy, green potion in a giant cauldron that turned all the children into frogs! Helen had to say a magic spell to turn them all back again! It was lots of fun!
As writers, the children used their sound knowledge to write a of ingredients to go into a witches cauldron, using some visual prompts to support them.
As artists, the children have been creating wax relief paintings by drawing first with a clear wax crayon and then adding watercolour paint to reveal their designs.
In PE we performed a sequence of controlled dance moves linked to the story 'Room on a Broom' The children had lots of fun riding on a giant broomstick!
As Mathematicians, the children have been identifying how many when thinking about one more and one less when looking at amounts of objects. We have also continued to learn our double number facts to 10.
In phonics, we have been learning more new sounds and working hard on developing our blending skills so that we can read words confidently and the children are making good progress- lots of practice is the key to success! On Monday we will send home login details for our online reading platform Oxford Owl. Each Monday the children will be issued a new reading book online which they must read as part of their homework. The reading books can be accessed on any smart device, PC or laptop. Teachers will be monitoring engagement with this.
