    Oceans reflect and review

23 November 2024 (by Andy Gilbert (Andy))

    Autumn week 11

This week in Oceans, to support our writing topic (The Street beneath our feet), we have been looking at rocks. We’ve compared and grouped together different kinds of rocks on the basis of their simple, physical properties and learned that there are three main types of rock: igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary.

In maths we’re continuing to think about multiplication. We’re exploring how multiplication is really just repetitive addition (It’s Nothing New!), applying commutative law to show that the same answer (the product) will be found no matter what order the factor pairs are in and creating fact families. Fact families highlight the relationship between 3 numbers and operations (multiplication and division)

Armed with this information, when the children learn one multiplication fact, they have actually learned four things! For example we learn 4 x 3 = 12, by applying commutative law we also know 3 x 4 = 12 and our fact families tell us that 12 ÷ 3 = 4 and 12 ÷ 4 = 3.

    Home learning this week:

    Maths: WhiteRose Workbooks: Multiplication

Sumdog: Please encourage children to log on and complete the tasks and challenges. Sumdog helps to build mathematical fluency through games. All children should know their login details. Please ask if they are unsure.

Reading: 5-15 mins every day. Read to them or with them. Get them to read outloud or ask them to read quietly and then tell you about what they've just read. Ask them to predict what will happen next in the story and importantly, why they think that.

Letters went home this week about two trips: Please complete and return the reply slips.

Tuesday 3rd December: Cinderella at the Royal Opera House, London
Oceans have been extremely fortunate to receive tickets (normally £100+ each!) to watch Cinderella at the Royal Opera House. We will be leaving after the morning register and expect to arrive back at school around 18:15. We will be updating our travel times using School Jotter as travelling through London can be tricky to predict.

Children will need to take a packed lunch and water bottle. If your child is entitled to a free school meal, one will be provided for them.

The cost for the performance and travel will be £16.50. Please pay using MCAS or pay cash into the office.

Monday 9th December: Oxford Song Concert at the Sheldonian Theatre
Oceans will be going to the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford to perform their songs. They have been working on this project since our visit to the Ashmolean at the start of the year: each class has written and helped to compose a song about Ancient Egypt. If you are able to, we would be thrilled if you and/or other family members could support the children by attending the performance.

Doors to the Sheldonian Theatre will open at 13.00. The concert is due to start at 13.15 and will end around 14.00.
Parents attending the concert will be able to take children home directly, otherwise we will return to school. We will update School Jotter with our intended arrival time.

Children will need to take a packed lunch and water bottle. If your child is entitled to a free school meal, one will be provided for them.

If you have any questions about the trips please contact us.
