    Coral Reef Reflect and Review

15 December 2024 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT))

There was a rascally Christmas cake on the loose in Coral Reef this week, thankfully it was just in a story!

The Rascally Cake story is the thoroughly revolting tale of the ghastly Mr. Skumskins O'Parsley, whose favourite dishes include wormcast butties, squashed tadpoles on toast and bogey burgers. O'Parsley decides one day to bake an extra special Christmas cake, with more revolting ingredients than you can imagine, but when the cake decides to eat HIM, he realizes it is time to mend his ways. In our Drawing Club, the children enjoyed drawing the Rascally Cake and places where the cake might be hiding and designing a nice dinner for the changed character O'Parsley.

We made our own Christmas cakes which we will be decorating and bringing home next week.

We created Christmas cards in our Key Groups.

In Phonics we continued to learn special friend sounds this week's sounds were 'th' and 'ch'. We practised reading words containing the sounds such as 'this' that' 'chat' and 'chop'. We also practised reading other cvc words and the children are doing well. We were so proud to see that so many of the children had completed their reading homework this week and they were rewarded with a prize from our prize basket. Thank you for helping your child to practise their reading at home, it really does make a difference to their progress in phonics.

In Maths we have been looking at our 5-frame Christmas countdown. Talking about how many days of school until the holidays and how many days have passed. We have been ordering numbers to 10 and practising our counting skills by counting amounts of objects slowly and sorting objects into groups of 1,2,3,4 and 5. We looked at amounts of 4 and 5 on our 5-frame and began to explore how 5 can made up of other numbers (Number bonds) for example 2+3 1+4.

The children have worked hard on perfecting their Nativity performance by practising every day. This ended with a dress rehearsal performance for the Nursery Children on Friday, which was a huge success! On Monday they will perform to the year 1 and 2 children.

On Tuesday the children will perform their Nativity show Shine, Star Shine at  and John Church on Cowley Road, all families and friends are welcome to watch. After the performance, you will be able to take your child home if you wish. Please let a member of the Coral Reef team that you are taking your child. If your child attends after-school club or you are unable to be at the performance we will walk your child back to school for their normal finish time.

On Wednesday it is Christmas Dinner Day and children are invited to wear their Christmas jumpers again. The children will also be taking part in a Theatre workshop in the afternoon, ready for our visit to the Theatre on Thursday to see The Elves and the Shoemaker.

In Our RE sessions we will be thinking about the Christmas story, discussing why people perform Nativities at Christmas time.

Next Term our topic theme will be 'Frozen Worlds' where we will be finding out about polar regions and learning about some of the animals that live there and their habitats.
