Coral Reef Reflect and Review24 January 2025 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT)) |
We have been immersed in the wonderful world of Pingu this week as part of our topic focus.
In Drawing Club we saw Pingu go fishing and be terrorised by a mischievous Seal, thankfully Pingu and the Seal became friends in the end and showed empathy and help to each other. The children enjoyed drawing and writing about Pingu, the things he might catch with his fishing line and designing a new fishing rod for him.
In PE we continued our Antarctic adventures as we moved as creatures who love the cold and snow.
Outside the children have enjoyed exploring water in different ways. They were intrigued by blowing through tubes and seeing how bubbles appeared in the water and the sound of their voice travelled. On Friday we created a bike washing station and the children had lots of fun cleaning the bikes and scooters with soapy water and brushes.
As Musicians, we practised using our talking voice and singing voice, we were brave by singing solo. We practised changing our voices so that we could sing loud and quiet, slow and fast as we moved like different animals.
As artists, we have been learning how to collage and developing our scissors skills to cut paper and pictures to add to our collage. Being able to use scissors is an important skill and it is helpful if children have access to child scissors at home- under your supervision.
As Mathematicians, we have been continuing to practice halving numbers and exploring why some numbers can be halved and others can't- the children have been amazing at recognising odd and even amounts, noticing that an odd amount cannot be halved. We have been learning about 4-sided shapes, and knowing what makes each shape special. We learned that a rectangle is a type of square, we sorted shapes and when on a square and rectangle hunt.
In topic we had fun investigating whether the ice melts faster in warm water or cold water. We made predictions and explored what happened when we added salt to the ice. We investigated what happened when we added Bicarbonate Soda to frozen vinegar.
Next week.....
We will be focusing on the beautiful story 'Lost and Found' We will be thinking about what clothing helps us stay warm in the winter and we will be finding out what clothing scientists wear when they work in Antarctica. We will be writing about Penguins recalling some of the facts we have learned.
In PE we will be starting our Gymnastics unit, learning how to make and hold different shapes and performing ribbon dances to music.
We will be finding out about Chinese New Year, looking at some of the ways people celebrate and listening to the story 'The Big Race'.
A reminder that PE is every Monday and children should come to school wearing their PE Kit, this can be warm charcoal coloured joggers or leggings, their PE t-shirt and a school jumper. As it is also our Forest school day we ask the children have warm coats, hats and gloves too.
Coming Up:
Mother's Day Tea Friday 28th March at 1.30 pm. We are inviting the children's significant females (mum's grandma's, nanny's, aunties) to join us at school for an afternoon of tea, coffee, cake and entertainment.
