    Oceans Reflect and Review

25 January 2025 (by Andy Gilbert (Andy))

    Spring Term Wk3

In Oceans this week we’ve been thinking about division. Children have been using their times-table facts and mental strategies to flexibly partition numbers into multiples of the number they are dividing by. For example, to calculate 48 ÷ 3, we partition 48 into 30 and 18, and then use 30 ÷ 3 = 10 and 18 ÷ 3 = 6 to work out 48 ÷ 3 = 16.

Lots of children find division trickier than multiplication. Children who are not confident with their times-table may facts find it difficult to partition the number into multiples of the number they are dividing by. We continue to remind them of the relationship between multiplication and division. Fact families: Learning a multiplication fact, teaches you 4 things not 1!

Times tables: Our Sumdog competitions are focused on supporting children with their times tables. Please your child is logging into Sumdog at home and taking part. Contact us - oceans@stfrideswides.co.uk - if they are unsure of their login details.

In English our Charlie and Chocolate Factory sentence stacking has ended as we move into planning our own writing - using the writing skills (lens) we’ve been practicing.

The week ended with our trip to the Sheldonian theatre to watch the Oxford Youth Orchestra perform. The children were fantastic during the concert and really enjoyed the 'conversation' between a beatboxer and the orchestra.

Next week, our focus in topic changes to Geography. We will be investigating places, building our geographical knowledge about the historical and present day Oxford as well as asking and answering geographical questions and identifying human and physical characteristics.
