Coral Reef Reflect and Review7 February 2025 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT)) |
A week full of learning, playing and exploring in the Coral Reef and showing kindness to each other!
We had another surprising visit from Pip-Pip the penguin this week. As writers, we recalled facts about penguins and used our phonic skills to write a sentence about Penguins. We were so impressed by the children's ideas and for having a 'can do' attitude to writing!
As part of Children’s Mental Health Week, we have been supporting the children with their understanding of kindness this week. In our Key groups, we had a Circle Time where we talked about what kindness looks like, how we could be kind to each other with our actions and our words. We met some puppet characters, one who was not being kind. We thought about how the unkind behaviour made the other puppet feel, we talked about how it feels when we are kind or someone shows kindness to us. The children shared some ways to show kindness in our classroom.
We adventured with two Polar Bear friends, Iris and Isaac, in Drawing Club. The Polar bears were upset with each other and stomped off in different directions but soon realised they had no one to share special moments with and learned that life is more valuable when shared with a friend.
As Mathematicians we have been learning about the different ways to make, 2,3,4, and 5. We played a fun target game by throwing beanbags in a hoop, seeing how many went inside and how many outside. Our teachers showed us how to record it as a number sentence for example 2 + 3 =5 or 4+1=5. We explored how to compare mass when looking at the weight of objects and using the language, heavy, heavier than, light, lighter than. We learnt how to use balance scales too.
In PE we continued to work on making different shapes with our bodies and enjoyed playing the ‘Beans’ game to practise the movements. We performed ribbon dances to the ‘Let it Go’ frozen song.
We talked about online safety and well-being to support the children’s understanding of how to be safe when using screens at home. The children learnt about only using screens when an adult is nearby, not talking to anyone online without an adult and telling an adult straight away if they see or experience something that upsets them.
As artists, we continued to work on our Arctic Animal Newspaper heads- the children will be able to bring these home at the end of next week
Next week:
It is our RE focus week and we will answer the big question… How do People Celebrate? We will be learning about different cultures and celebrations that happen in spring looking further at the Lunar New Year and learning about Persian New Year Nowruz and Holi.
