    Coral Reef Reflect and Review

14 February 2025 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT))

We have been learning about how New Year is celebrated worldwide, across different faiths through our RE focus this week. The children shared ways they like to celebrate with their families too.

The children learnt about New Years Eve, Lunar New Year, Nowruz and Holi celebrations, we talked about the similarities and differences and the teachers helped us to understand that all of the celebrations focused on a new start.

As Mathematicians we have been measuring and comparing weight and capacity; using the language heavier than, lighter than, full, half-full and empty. The children discovered that just because something is big does not always mean it is heavy.

Today all children have been issued login details for Sumdog. Sumdog is a digital learning resource designed to raise engagement and improve skills in maths. It can be accessed on any smart device or laptop.

As writers we have been practising our handwriting, focusing on the letters s and f. If your child is writing at home, please support them in writing each sound using the correct formation- using the handwriting phrases in their green sound books.

As scientists we learned that Penguins feathers are waterproof. We experimented with oil and water in a bag to show how waterproof works and discover why. The children were amazed when they saw the oli and water separating.

In PE we participated in a Luna New Year-themed Yoga session, moving our body to become the different animals in the 'Great Race' story. Some of the moves and poses were quite challenging but we all had fun trying!

Next Term we will be delving into the wonderful world of monsters through our new topic 'Wild Things' our first story focus will be 'Where The Wild Things Are' one of the greatest children's book of all time!

As part of learning we will be looking at maps and creating our own, we will be learning how to sculpt with clay and adventuring with  other monster-themed stories.
