    Coral Reef Reflect and Review

7 March 2025 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT))

World Book Day is one of our favourite days in Coral Reef, and we had so much fun on Thursday, dressing up and sharing stories.

Our story focus this week has been the spine-tickling traditional tale 'The Hairy Toe.' In the story, while out picking beans, an old woman finds a hairy toe - and soon wishes she hadn't - especially when its owner comes looking for it! The children loved the story and had lots of fun drawing and writing their own ideas about what the monster looked like. Who would come and rescue the old woman now the monster has found her? And where the monster would put his toe now, he has it back.

As artists, the children have been exploring clay and using their hands and tools to manipulate it and create their own designs. Next week, they will begin to create clay monsters.

As mathematicians, the children have been learning about one more and one less when working with numbers up to 8 and using 10 frames and counting objects to support their understanding. The children have revisited making pairs and notising when an amount was odd or even using their reasoning skills to explain why. The children have also begun learning to count in tens to a hundred, and again, we have used full 10 frames to support the children's understanding.

Dental health is important and on Tuesday we learnt about ways to keep our teeth healthy. The children impressed us with their knowledge around healthy foods and drinks and knowing how often and how long they should brush their teeth. Afterwards, each child received a toothbrush and toothpaste to take home and they practised brushing their teeth for 2 minutes.

As Geographers, the children thought about maps. They shared their knowledge of maps, explored maps linked to stories and created their own maps of our classroom. They also had a visit from a very cheeky monster who left them a message! I wonder if we will see him again?

This week our poem has been called 'Pancakes' Ask your child to resite the poem at home- they know all the words!

All children have brought home an invitation today for our Mother's Day tea on the new date Wednesday, 2nd April 1.30pm Please let us know if you can come so that we can ensure there are enough hot drinks and cakes for everyone!

Next week we will be thinking about the classic story 'Not Now Bernard'. We will be designing and making our own finger puppets and creating clay monsters.

As Mathematicians, we will be revisiting doubling and learning about length, height and time.

A reminder that all children need to have spare clothes in school- these can stay on their peg in a bag until they need them.

If your child has borrowed items of spare clothing belonging to school, please check at home and return any borrowed items as we no longer have a supply of spare clothing.

    Parent/Care Survey
We are really interested in hearing from you as parents and carers about your and your children's experience of our school. We would be grateful if you would fill out this very short questionnaire. The information we collect will help us inform decisions about the school so we can better support you and your children to fulfill our vision of meeting children where they are on their learning journeys.
    Thanks,
    St Frideswide Governing Body
The school governors are appointed by Oxford Diocesan Schools Trust who run St Frideswide. We focus on strategy, policy, budgeting, and ethos working alongside senior leaders and supporting teachers to try and make St Frideswide the best school we can make it.
