Oceans Reflect and review8 March 2025 (by Andy Gilbert (Andy)) |
Spring 2, Week 2
In Maths this week we have continued to look at fractions. Children have learnt that a is part of a whole that has been divided into equal parts. We previously identified the role of the denominator and the numerator and have been using this knowledge to compare and order unit fractions as well as find equivalent fractions. More fractions next week - are we half way or three quarters or one fifth through this learning!?
In English, we’ve continued writing verses for our own poems based on The River by Valerie Bloom. As well as rhyming words, we’ve been exploring the use of figurative language, alliteration and personification: writing techniques that can make descriptions more vivid and creative. Next week, we’ll start planning and then create our our poems.
On Wednesday, we took a trip to St Mary and St John Church for a Lent service. Lent, a season of reflection and preparation, is the period of 40 days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar. At the same time we are supporting many children during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. While only a small number of Christians continue the tradition of fasting for Lent, fasting remains an important aspect of Ramadan. A great opportunity to point out to our children the similarities as well as differences between different religions and cultures.
On Thursday, for World Book Day, we spoke about and enjoyed books. Thinking about last terms book, Charlie and the Chocolate factory Indian class created a showstopping, sweet shop (pictured). There can be few things as powerful as regularly reading to a young child. By starting to read early on, children develop valuable skills that will help them excel academically: become better writers, be more creative, or simply relax before bedtime!
Reading is a superpower! Read together this weekend and make it a habit.
