Coral Reef Reflect and Review14 March 2025 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT)) |
We have been busy creating maps of the classroom for the mischievous monster who visited the classroom last week. The Monster told us that he would be making mischief in our classroom, and he did, there was mess everywhere this morning!
In Drawing Club, the children have enjoyed the classic story 'Not Now, Bernard' In the story, Bernard's distracted parents fail to notice he has been eaten and replaced by a monster! The children were quite shocked that Bernard was never seen again! They thought about the story setting by drawing and labelling Bernard's house. They drew and wrote about tasty things for the monster to eat, to take away the taste of Bernard and drew their ideas about where the monster might have come from.
As artists, we have continued to work on creating our clay monster sculptures- they are all looking fantastic and the children have had great ideas about what features they want their monsters to have.
In Phonics, some children have begun to learn the next set of 'Special Friend' sounds and read and write words that contain these sounds. These are known as diagraphs and trigraphs where two or three letters make one sound such as 'ay', 'ee' and 'igh'. This is pleasing progress. Please support your child in reading and writing the sounds at home.
In PE, we continued to refine the gymnastic shapes we have been making with our bodies and exploring different ways to make the shapes on the benches. We also practised balancing beanbags on parts of our bodies as we created different shapes. It was challenging because we had to keep our bodies still!
As Mathematicians, we have been revisiting our double number facts. We have been looking at fact families and switchers when looking at number sentences. We have been learning about measuring length and height and using the vocabulary long and short when describing the length of playdough worms and objects around our classroom and tall and short when measuring towers and each other. After measuring with cubes or glass beads many children could explain why something was long, short, or tall.
We learnt a poem about a Furry, Furry Squirrel.
We have been busy learning the lyrics to a song for the Mother's Day Tea. Please let us know if you can come! Next week, we will be learning a special poem, too.
Next week we will be thinking about the animated TV programme 'Trap Door', which those of you of a certain age may remember from your childhood! This will inspire our drawings and writing as part of Drawing Club.
As writers, we will use our phonics knowledge to write sentences about our clay monsters.
As designers, we will be creating shadow puppets and performing shadow puppet shows.
Don't forget to email us a photo of your child as a baby/toddler for us to look at as part of our history learning we will need this by Friday. Coralreef@stfrideswides.co.uk
