    Explorers reflect and review

    20 June 2025 (by Beth Taylor (Beth))

    A very warm, busy week!

    Year 5 have been working incredibly hard this week on their assessments - Well done all!

    On Tuesday, year 5 had a fabulous day out at St Anne’s college, taking part in a science day. We explored: fossils, understanding different types and what they tell us; the hydrophobic nature of leaves; how an atom microscope works; and forces by creating our own rockets, developing our scientific enquiry skills as we attempted to make the reactions quicker or our rockets fly higher.

    On Monday, St Fred’s had a bicycle session with NIck Rose, who taught the children how to fix a puncture. During Humanities, we have been learning about the Maya civilisation and we even have a go at writing using the Maya Glyph.

    During Maths, we have looked at a number of worded problems based on different recipes  and compared different supermarkets, to see which provided a better deal.

    In English, we have continued reading The Explorer and have been making predictions about what will happen next whilst focusing on our sentence sacking.

    Next week:

    The following secondary schools have their transfer days next week;

    Thursday 26th June; Cheney, Spires, GreyFriars and TOA

    Friday 27th June : Cheney, Spires and GreyFriars

    All the information regarding the transfer days has been shared to all parents by the secondary schools. If you have any questions please speak to Sereeta or email explorers@stfrideswides.co.uk

    Extras:

    Year 5 have come home with a letter today about 2 trips: Space Makers on Tuesday 1st July and Ice Skating on Wednesday 9th July. Please return the permission slips by Friday 27th June, and payments made by Tuesday 1st July - thank you.

    Dear Parents and Carers

    In order to support attendance AND reduce the cost of family holidays, we think carefully each year about our INSET days.  We try to place them with the aim of giving families an opportunity to book a holiday outside of peak dates and hopefully costing less.

    The dates you could do this next year are 22nd, 23rd October and 3rd November, giving a potential holiday of 12 days from Thursday 22nd October to Monday 3rd November.

    Please book your holidays in this period, or any of our other school holidays and NOT during term time.  It is county guidance that school can only authorise term time holidays in exceptional circumstances and county will consider issuing a penalty fine for unauthorised absence.
