    Explorers Reflect and Review

    Autumn 1: Week 2

As writers, in Beagle we have been looking at the messages portrayed by the author in the language choice and layout in the book “I talk like a river.” We have used the illustrations to help support our discussions around the emotions and expressions of what the boy’s life is like. In Endurance and Endeavour, we have continued to read The 1000 Year Old Boy while focusing on developing our writing skills by expanding sentences through adding more description: adjectives, adverbs, expanded clauses and dialogue.

As mathematicians, we have continued to look at place value, reading and writing larger numbers (up to 1,000,000) as well as focusing on finding 10, 100, 1000 or even 10,000 more or less.

As historians, we have continued to look at the Anglo-Saxons, looking at beliefs and the evidence given to us through archaeological finds. Using artefacts as sources we have been able to see how from the 7th-11th centuries a pagan Anglo-Saxon Britain slowly became more christian.

As musicians, we are playing the ukulele. We have been looking at strumming patterns and the A minor chord: finding how to play it and how to switch to it quickly.

We also had some fun this week during a visit from The Adopt a School programme. Delivered by The Royal Academy of Culinary Arts’ these sessions support children to develop healthy eating habits and hopes to encourage an enthusiasm and interest in food and cooking. We tasted different foods and were surprised to find out that lots of us did not like the taste of chocolate in its pure form and that it was the addition of sugar that made it more pleasurable.
