    Islands Reflect & Review

28 November 2025 (by Stefan Mitsis (Stefan))

The children have had a wonderful week and have really begun to embrace the festive season. Across the week, the classes have been practising their Christmas songs in preparation for our School Christmas Carol Service on Tuesday 9th December. The children have shown great enthusiasm during rehearsals and are beginning to sing beautifully together. In music lessons, they have also been learning and rehearsing a variety of pieces to support their performance skills. If you are able to, please spend a little time practising Away in a Manger with your child at home—this will help build their confidence for the big day.

In topic lessons, the children have been exploring slider mechanisms as part of our Design & Technology unit. They have investigated how simple moving parts work by examining real-life examples and experimenting with their own designs. The children have been learning and using technical vocabulary such as slider, bar, side by side, forwards, and backwards, and it has been lovely to see them applying this language confidently in their explanations and written sentences. These skills will support them as they begin to design and create their own Christmas cards with moving mechanisms, which they are already very excited about sharing with you soon.

The children have shown great focus, creativity, and teamwork throughout the week.

    Have a great weekend,

    Islands Team

Christmas Carol Service for KS1 & KS2 – Islands, Oceans and Explorers We are excited to invite you to our KS1 and KS2 Christmas Carol Service on Tuesday 9th December. This year, we are fortunate to be holding the service at The University Church of St Mary the Virgin, High Street, Oxford (OX1 4BJ). Parents and carers are warmly welcome to join us between 10:45–11:30am to watch your child’s phase perform their Christmas song and reading. Parent Volunteers Needed To help ensure the smooth running of the event, we are looking for a number of parent volunteers to accompany and support KS1 during the travel to and from the church. If you are able to help, please let Lauren or Menna know. After the service, all children will return to school for the rest of the day as normal. Look forward to seeing you there, St Frideswide Team.
