The Barrier Reef Reflect an Review

12 December 2025 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT))

Our highlight has to be our Nativity performance, but there has been lots of other good stuff happening too!

We’ve had a very busy and enjoyable week in Early Years and with our Nativity performance at the church on Wednesday.

The children worked incredibly hard learning their songs and lines, and showed real confidence when it came to performing. We are very proud of how well they did, and we hope you enjoyed watching as much as we did.

A big thank you to the parents who helped walk the children safely to the church, and to all the families who came along to support and cheer them on. It made such a difference to the children. We were also very grateful for the lovely messages shared on Instagram and by email. Thank you for taking the time to send such positive feedback.

What we’ve been learning this week...

As writers, the children have enjoyed listening to and talking about seasonal stories such as The Little Fir Tree and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. In Reception, the children have continued practising their Set 1 phonics sounds and blending the sounds to read and write familiar words. Please continue to support our child to read and write the sounds at home too- extra practice is beneficial to their progress.

As mathematicians, the children have been exploring numbers and shapes through practical, hands-on activities, building confidence with counting and recognising shapes in their environment.

As storytellers, the children have used props as part of Tales Toolkit to retell familiar stories, helping them develop their listening skills, vocabulary and confidence when speaking in front of others and understanding story elements and structures.

As musicians, the children have been singing Nativity songs and enjoying some festive music together, learning to listen carefully and perform as part of a group.

In the afternoons, the children have been busy making Christmas cakes, chopping and combing ingredients. Next week they will be decorating them and bringing them home for you to try!

As artists, the children have been painting with watercolours and exploring colour mixing.

    Reception Trip – Pegasus Theatre

A reminder that Reception children will be visiting the Pegasus Theatre on Thursday to see Supermarket Scrooge.

If any parents are able to help with the trip, please let us know.
Please also remember to make payment for the trip if you have not already done so.

    School Bike Library

We would also like to remind families that our school bike library has a good supply of small bikes available for children to borrow on a long-term basis. If this would be useful for your family, please see Andrew after school on Wednesday out side the main school gates.

    Ilness

You will have seen in the national news that many schools are being hit by illness. In the Barrier Reef we too have a lot of children off with bugs at the moment and hope that they feel better soon.
To prevent the spread of infections, if your child is poorly, please do not send them into school until they are fully recovered. Please keep us informed by emailing attendance@stfrideswides.co.uk

    Nativity Photos

If you captured any lovely pictures of our Nativity on Wednesday, we would love you to share them with us. Please email Barrierreef@stfrideswides.co.uk. Thank you

    End of Term

Term ends on Friday at 11.30 am

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

    Kind regards,
    The Early Years Team
