Oceans Reflect and Review6 February 2026 (by Beth I) |
And that’s a wrap for the penultimate week before half term!
As writers, we have been looking at how to consider a character’s position and give clear reasons for and against their next action. We have continued to read Arthur and the Golden Rope and have explored characters’ thoughts and feelings, discussed the choices they faced, and have been looking at answering questions using evidence from the text to support our writing.
As mathematicians, we have started our unit on length and perimeter. We have been learning abbreviations such as km, m, cm, and mm, and exploring equivalent lengths by converting between units. Indian class have also practised measuring accurately and calculating perimeter using different strategies. Arctic class have been looking at assessment style questions to further their understanding of counting in scales and what this looks like in measurements.
In our writing workshop, we have been looking at poetry. We started this unit of work with many children saying that they didn’t like poetry - however after exploring different types of poetry lots of children realised that maybe they just hadn’t found the right ones for them until now. In Indian class, we have planned our haikus by carefully choosing language and focusing on syllable patterns. We discussed imagery and word choice, and we will be writing our haikus next week. In Arctic class, we wrote our own acrostic poems with our names and the different things that we like.
As historians, we have made our very own Viking longships and learned about the Great Heathen Army. We explored why the Vikings invaded, how they travelled, and the impact they had on Britain. We have discussed the different tactics that were used and shared our opinions. We spent time thinking about how to actively listen to others before responding and how to effectively communicate. Next week, we will be working as scientists and exploring magnetism.
Homework has been set for both Indian and Arctic. Please encourage your children to complete these and engage in daily reading and multiplication practice, as this will support their learning and help build confidence and fluency.
Please remind your child that their reading books need to come into school everyday. This is how staff are able to check their reading progress and assign them a reading level. If you have any school library books at home, please return them so that other children can use them to support their reading journey.
Have a lovely weekend
Oceans team.
