    Explorers Reflect and Review

27 February 2026 (by Beth Curtis (Beth))

Ptolemy, Copernicus and Galileo, astrolabes, globes and telescopes - just some of the amazing Scientists, theories and instruments that we explored at the Oxford Science Museum this week.

Welcome back! This week we have been historians and astronomers, starting our new Space Race topic with a trip to the History of Science Museum, learning all about how our ancestors learnt and understood space.

As writers, Beagle have started their new text ‘Curiosity, the story of a Mars rover’, focusing on forming clear and coherent sentences which we have been punctuating accurately. Cook and Shackleton have begun looking at our new book; “Cosmic” by Frank Cottrell-Boyce. We’ve really enjoyed reading it so far, and have started to sentence stack developing our use of language and punctuation in lists. We also wrote recounts from our exciting science museum trips earlier in the week.

As mathematicians, Beagle have been working on filling their gaps, doubling, halving and thinking about multiplication and division. Shackleton have been looking at decimals, focusing on the place value and what these mean, switching the integer values between decimals and fractions. Cook have been focusing on multiplying and dividing fractions by integers and other fractions. We’ve looked at a range of methods to help us solve these quickly and accurately.

As a phase, we’ve begun to learn about the Space Race and the launch of Sputnik in 1957 and how this initiated the start of the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States of America.

    Notices:

Thank you to everyone who has paid and returned the permission slip for our trip to London on the 26th March. Please make sure these are returned to us as soon as possible, with payment made on bromcom or via the office.

All children have been issued with their third space login details. This is a great resource for them to be using regularly at home. Please encourage your child to complete at least a session per week, in a quiet space at home. Thank you.
