Barrier Reef Weekly Reflect and Review15 May 2026 (by Laura Thornton (LauraT)) |
This week in Barrier Reef, the children have continued their exciting Into the Wild learning journey through stories, animals, habitats and creative exploration.
As communicators…
the children developed their speaking and listening skills by sharing their ideas during group discussions about jungle and savannah animals. Reception children explored facts about giraffes and discussed what they could see and hear in the African savannah, while Pre-school children practised speaking clearly and confidently during storytelling and circle time activities.
As storytellers…
the children continued to immerse themselves in exciting texts, poems and Tales Toolkit adventures. Pre-school children enjoyed the story steps of Milly the Mermaid, while Reception children explored stories such as The Princess and the Pea alongside their poetry basket focus, I Have a Little Frog.
As mathematicians…
the children explored numbers, patterns and shape through practical activities. Reception children continued their learning about numbers beyond 20 and seeing what happens when more is added to an amount, while Pre-school children developed their subitising skills by recognising quantities up to 6 without counting.
As artists…
the children expressed themselves creatively through animal and nature-inspired artwork. Reception children created beautiful savannah art using silhouettes and watercolours inspired by giraffes and African landscapes. Pre-school children explored sunflower art and animal-themed creations linked to our wild world topic. They have enjoyed creating Animal and Ninja Masks at our creative table.
As explorers…
the children investigated the natural world around them and have been excitedly checking their sunflower plant progress each day. Reception children learned about animals that live in the savannah and discovered fascinating giraffe facts, while Pre-school children explored life cycles and continued their outdoor learning through Forest School experiences.
As movers…
the children strengthened their physical development through Dough Disco, Write Dance, ball games and team activities as well as having fun playing parachute games together in the garden. These sessions continue to support coordination, balance and fine motor control in a fun and engaging way.

A message for our Pre-school families…
Welcome letters for those children starting Reception with us in September were sent home today. We are very excited to begin preparing the children for this special next step in their learning journey. If you have any questions about the transition process, please speak to Laura who will be happy to help.
We have had some technical issues with our weekly postings so apologies to those of you who enjoy talking about the learning your child has done together. Thank you for your continued support. We love hearing the children share their learning and discoveries from home too. Perhaps you could talk together about your child’s favourite wild animal and where it lives!
