    Islands Weekly Reflect and Review

19 January 2024 (by Lauren Arbour (Lauren))

This week in Islands we have continued to explore the Postal System and how Rowland Hill introduced the Penny Black stamp and changed the way mail was sent and received.

The children learnt that officials were worried that people would reuse stamps by removing cancellation marks with water or chemicals. So in 1840, shortly after the Penny Black stamp was introduced, and the Rainbow Trials took place. The children carried out investigations to see why the penny black stamp was changed to red.

Can you ask them to tell you about Rowland Hill and why he was a significant person in the History of the postal system.

Next week we will be exploring printing as artists. We will start the week with making prints in clay and dough, designing our own stamp. We will then recreate our stamp on a polystyrene tile to then experiment with different forms of printing leading to some effective prints.

Reminder - Home Learning is due on a Wednesday. All children will be marking their white rose maths homework in class on Thursday to ensure they have the opportunity to consolidate the learning that we have been covering in class.

All children need to be in their PE kit on Thursdays and Fridays. All children across the Islands phase will participate in electives that require their PE kit on these days.
