    Islands Reflect and Review

19 April 2024 (by Lauren Arbour (Lauren))

This week we started our topic ‘Australian Adventure’.

We started the week as tourists from the United Kingdom to get a better understanding of the local area and its history - landscape and indigenous culture. The team visited the locality and talked to the indigenous people to get a background, not as people ‘discovering’ the land, but as people learning about the land to explain to other outsiders.

We explored Australian animals and their habitats, thinking about what attributes and characteristics they have. We learnt about many new animals that some of us had never heard of or seen before. In English we started looking at our new text ‘Wombat goes Walkabout’ and ‘Meerkat Mail’. The children met many different animals in the Australian bush and began writing their sentences for their narrative story piece this term.

Next week we will continue our role as travel agents and discover incredible landmarks that can be found in and around Australia. The children will be tasked with understanding famous landmarks and explaining it to visitors and advertising it for the tourism board. In the process of the work, they will meet a local Aboriginal person who explains the landmark belongs to their people.

On Monday Islands will be taking part in a whole day music project with Oxford Song. We will be working with musician Joe, focussing on helping the children with areas of singing, specifically controlling their voices and singing in tune with the piano.

    Notices:

Reminder - All children should be in their school uniform everyday. As we begin to move into the Spring/Summer weather and begin to purchase Summer uniforms for your child, please ensure it is the correct uniform before making any purchases. We are aware that it is very difficult to find maroon/burgundy school dresses, so it has been decided that the summer dresses can also be PINK. We have checked and PINK gingham school dresses are available at Argos, Sainsburys, and Asda George.

All summer dresses should be maroon/burgundy or pink NOT RED as this is not our school uniform.
