    Islands Reflect and Review

26 April 2024 (by Lauren Arbour (Lauren))

    Another amazing week exploring Australia.

On Monday Islands took part in a whole day music project with Oxford Song. We worked with musician Joe, focussing on areas of singing, specifically controlling our voices and singing in tune with the piano. This was great fun and we loved exploring different sounds we could make with our voices.

In topic, we continued our role as travel agents and discovered incredible landmarks that can be found in and around Australia. The children were tasked with understanding famous landmarks and explaining it to visitors and advertising it for the tourism board. In the process of the work, we met a local Aboriginal person who explained the landmark belongs to their people.

Next week as scientists, we will observe and describe how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants. We will also describe how plants need water, light and a suitable temperature to grow/stay healthy. Through investigating, we will share information about the needs of bulbs, discuss hydroponics and the concept of growing bulbs in water, plant a bean in a bag and record its growth and lastly discuss what might happen to the bean and its growth.

We will monitor our bean throughout the next couple of weeks and complete a diary to investigate and compare our findings.

If you have any bulbs or seeds at home that you would not mind sending in with your child to explore and plant, that would be great!

    Notices:

Monday 17th June As part of our topic, ‘Australian Adventure’, this term, we will be taking part in a Didgeridoo, Australia and Aboriginal Earth art workshop in school. The children will have the opportunity to listen to dreamtime tales of the first time a didgeridoo was played. We will find out that Aboriginal Australians see themselves as part of the landscape and that everything has a spirit to it – including a didgeridoo, which the children will have the opportunity to play. We will take part in Earth Painting with paints made from earth from our school grounds.

As part of our design and technology unit and exploring the Commonwealth and Monarchy, we will be putting together our very own Royal Celebration. All children will be making their own portable snacks for the celebration as well as designing their own patriotic tie dye t-shirt that will represent the colours of the United Kingdom. This celebration will be designed and led by the children in islands and will be an exciting end to a wonderful school year.

The cost of this amazing workshop and our tie dye t-shirt activity is £8.00. Ideally please pay via Pupil Asset.  If you are not able to access Pupil Asset please complete the form sent home with your child and return with the payment totalling £8.00. Payment due by Monday 3rd June 2024
