    Islands Weekly Reflect and Review

18 October 2024 (by Lauren Arbour (Lauren))

This week was definitely the best week yet for the islands phase!

At the start of the week the children embarked on their first coach trip this academic year to Eastrop Farm and Coleshill Vegetable Unit. They started the morning learning all about Dairy farming and how Liza and her team take care of the hundreds of cows that they have in their care. They explored the maternity paddocks and got to meet all of the pregnant cows as they grazed on fresh grass and other delicious treats. Tanya explained to us why they had bracelets on their ankles, earrings in their ears and numbers printed on their bottoms- I wonder if the children are able to remember why?

They then spent a long time in the barn with the baby calves who were all too keen to play with the children as they sniffed and licked their hands. The morning was very busy with tours, sitting in the tractors and learning all about how the cows milk is pasteurised ready for us to buy in the shops.

In the afternoon, we had lunch in a barn and explored the orchards, poly tunnels, honesty shop and greenhouses. All of which had the most wonderful produce growing ready to be shared at the markets and with local buyers. They even got to try a delicious apple freshly picked off of the tree.

Next week we will be celebrating the end of our first term with an ‘Enrichment Week’! During this week the children will take on the role of a team of experienced park designers who are commissioned by two elderly (and very tall) ladies to build a park in memory of their brother. The sisters would like the park to be  open to the public and to be of particular interest to young children who their brother enjoyed playing with in his own garden. The park is to be built on the site of their brothers’ old house, a large and interesting ancient castle.

They will also be reminded of our Golden Rules whilst asking the enquiry question- “What responsibility do we have to each other’s well-being and happiness”.

To support our week we will need as much recycling as you can carry into school for the children… We want to go big- boxes, pots, lids, straws, rope, wrappers and anything else you think could transform a giant’s castle.
