Islands Weekly Reflect and Review2 March 2025 (by Lauren Arbour (Lauren)) |
On Wednesday Fiji and Sumatra had a very wet but exciting day exploring the Botanical Gardens.
They explored the Rainforest House and looked at plants that commonly grow and produce things like sugar cane, cocoa, cotton, rubber. They also took part in a guided sketching session in the Arid House (desert plants), Carnivorous House and Cloud Forest and lastly explored the beautiful gardens. Although the weather was very wet, the children embraced it and were keen to learn more about extreme weather and how plants can thrive in different conditions.
In topic this week, we immersed ourselves in Mantle of the Expert, linking our geography and science knowledge together. We created our own island in our classroom and used blankets, jumpers and cloths to represent different geographical features. We listened to the sounds that we may hear on mountains, near rivers and in forests whilst thinking about how it makes us feel and what makes the geographical features similar and different.
We will continue to immerse ourselves into the role of a team of experts in disaster assistance and management traveling to Dominica to see the effects of a hurricane at first hand, six months on from the disaster (the hurricane that really took place in 2016). Essential services are not all in place and nature trails that encourage tourists are still blocked. Help is needed to bring the tourists back as the Island needs tourism to survive. Some islanders have already left. A monsoon might strike again and some islanders won’t move to higher ground to live. Early warning system is needed so we will be acting fast.
*If you have any recycling please sent in for the children to use during their play projects.
