    Islands Reflect & Review

12 September 2025 (by Stefan Mitsis (Stefan))

What a great first full week the children have had! They have come into school ready to learn and have already been showing great enthusiasm in their new topics.

As historians, we have been using Mantle of the Expert to explore elephants, thinking carefully about what they need to survive and how we might design an elephant enclosure. Next week, we will be introducing our new topic on the Ice Age and learning about elephants and the ancestors of the mammoth.

As mathematicians, the children have been learning about grouping and counting within place value. They have been introduced to the place value chart and have enjoyed lots of hands-on maths using physical resources to build their understanding.

In English, we have been exploring instruction writing using the picture book How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth to inspire our ideas. The children have been introduced to imperative verbs (“bossy verbs”) and have been practising including them in their own instructions.

The children have also been busy with creative classroom projects linked to our topic. They have worked together to build, design, and explore ideas, helping to bring their learning to life in fun and practical ways.

    Key Information

Monday 15th -On Monday, we will be holding a ‘Cake and Curriculum' talk after school. This is a great opportunity for you to see what we are looking to achieve this year and include some helpful ways in which you can best support your child. There will also be an opportunity for you to talk to your child’s teacher if you have any questions. The gates will open at 3pm instead of at 2:50 as previously advertised to ensure all children are dismissed, including those who attend after-school club. The meeting will be held in the lunch hall.

Tuesday 16th - School Photos Day!
