Islands Reflect & Review22 October 2025 (by Stefan Mitsis (Stefan)) |
It has been a short but very busy three-day week filled with wonderful experiences — a visit from a fantastic author, great learning both in the classroom and outdoors, and a joyful Harvest Messy Church celebration to end the week.
This week, the children have had a special focus on RE, where we explored Christianity with a particular emphasis on kindness. Our big inquiry question was: Is it possible to be kind to everyone all of the time? The children shared thoughtful ideas and showed their understanding in lots of creative ways. They made bright and meaningful kindness posters, wrote letters to people who might need encouragement, and even took part in a role play of the story of The Good Samaritan. Through this, we discussed how Jesus showed kindness to everyone — even to those who were unkind — and how he taught people not to judge others but to love and care for them. The children reflected beautifully on how they can show kindness in their own lives, both in school and at home.
We were also very lucky to have an author visit from Samantha Rodgers. The children listened with excitement as she shared some of her engaging books and spoke passionately about her love of both teaching and writing. They asked fantastic questions about what it’s like to be an author and learned about the inspiration behind her stories. The session really motivated the children — many left feeling inspired to become writers themselves! We reminded them that everyone in Islands is an author and storyteller, and that maybe one day, writing could even be their job.
To finish the week, we celebrated Harvest Messy Church, which was a truly special and joyful event. The children sang their Harvest songs with great enthusiasm, listened to an engaging story from Miriam, and enjoyed a lovely time with their parents and carers. Together, they created beautiful autumn-themed crafts, explored sensory activities, and celebrated the importance of sharing and giving thanks for what we have. It was heartwarming to see families working side by side, making, talking, and enjoying time together in such a positive, community-focused way.
It’s been a short week, but one filled with kindness, creativity, and celebration — a perfect way to end the half term!
Key information
Islands are in need of materials for junk modelling. We would be very grateful if you could bring some plastics/recyclables when the children return after this half term.
We return to school on Tuesday 4th November.
