    Islands Reflect & Review

12 December 2025 (by Stefan Mitsis (Stefan))

This week, the children have had a busy but very productive week of learning, performing, and really building relationships within the phase family.

We were incredibly proud of the children’s performance in church — they worked so hard to learn the songs, and their dedication truly shone through on the day. Their confidence, teamwork, and joy in performing made it a truly special moment for everyone.

In Science, the children were young scientists! They learned how living things depend on one another to survive and explored the importance of food chains within an ecosystem. We took our science learning outdoors, where the children investigated real habitats on the school grounds and recorded their observations like true researchers. They created correctly ordered food chains and practised classifying animals as carnivores, herbivores, or omnivores to deepen their understanding. Their curiosity and scientific questioning were fantastic to see.

In Maths, we have been learning about polygons. The children focused on naming, describing, and sorting common 2D shapes. They learned that polygons have straight lines and vertices, and they practised distinguishing between regular and irregular shapes. They also counted sides, compared properties, and even used natural materials outdoors to create shapes on the playground, applying their learning in a hands-on, memorable way.

In English, the children worked hard to plan their own narratives. They used the writing techniques they have been practising to create imaginative and unique stories, thinking carefully about characters, settings, and problems. Many children chose to take their planning outdoors, gathering inspiration from nature, shadows, and quiet storytelling spaces in the playground. Their ideas were wonderfully creative and showed how much progress they have made this term.

Overall, it has been a wonderful week full of creativity, curiosity, and growing confidence. From performing in church to exploring habitats, building shapes outdoors, and crafting their own imaginative stories, the children have shown fantastic enthusiasm in every area of learning. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and the positive attitudes they bring each day as we move towards the end of the term.
