    Islands Reflect & Review

9 January 2026 (by Stefan Mitsis (Stefan))

What a great first week back it has been for Islands!

Happy New Year!!! It was lovely to see all of our families back at school.

The children settled back into school brilliantly, remembering our classroom routines and expectations really well. They have also embraced some new routines, including our new ODPDR options, showing independence, responsibility, and enthusiasm when making choices and engaging with their learning. It has been wonderful to see how confidently they have adapted and supported one another as a class community.

We were also very lucky to enjoy some snowy weather this week! The children loved playing together in the snow, exploring how it felt, looked, and changed as they moved through it. They worked cooperatively, made tracks, built small snow creations, and shared lots of excitement and laughter. This outdoor experience supported teamwork, communication, and curiosity, and provided a lovely opportunity for the children to learn through play and exploration.

This week, we have had a strong focus on RE, exploring Islam and the question “What does God mean to Muslims?”The children used their oracy skills beautifully, taking part in thoughtful discussions and listening carefully to one another’s ideas. They explored the meaning of Allah’s 99 Names, learning how each name describes an important quality of God, such as kindness, mercy, and forgiveness. The children shared their reflections respectfully and made meaningful connections between these ideas and their own experiences, showing maturity and empathy in their discussions.

Looking ahead to next week, we are very excited to begin our new topic focus on Australia. In our first lesson, the children will become experts who investigate Australia’s geography, history, and culture. Through role-play and enquiry, they will explore what makes Australia unique, including its animals, weather, and Aboriginal heritage. This active, imaginative approach will allow the children to ask questions, solve problems, and deepen their understanding by stepping into the role of experts learning about a fascinating part of the world.

We are incredibly proud of how positively the children have started the term and are looking forward to another exciting week of learning ahead.
