    Islands Reflect & Review

23 January 2026 (by Stefan Mitsis (Stefan))

This week has been a very busy and exciting week of learning as we continued exploring our topic on Australia.

As explorers and travel agents, the children imagined they were preparing tourists for a trip to Australia. They thought carefully about what items people might need to pack, considering the country’s hot climate, unique wildlife, and varied environments. We explored the animals that live in Australia and discussed how these differ from animals found in the UK. The children also began learning about the history of Australia and its Aboriginal people, recognising them as the first inhabitants of the land and learning about their deep connection to nature.

The children explored physical and human features of Australia, identifying deserts, beaches, and natural landmarks alongside cities and man-made features. They compared Australia’s weather to the UK and located Australia on a world map, noticing how far away it is and where it sits in relation to the Equator. These discussions helped develop their geographical vocabulary and understanding of the wider world.

As writers, the children have been exploring the narrative Wombat Goes Walkabout. They have loved linking this text to our Australia topic and have been learning how authors use language creatively. We explored alliteration, onomatopoeia, and repetition, identifying these features in the story and discussing the effect they have on the reader. The children have been experimenting with using these techniques in their own writing, creating lively and imaginative sentences inspired by the Australian setting. Making clear links between our topic and English has helped the children see how their learning connects across subjects.

We also had a very exciting visit from the Aquafresh Club this week. The children learned all about how to look after their teeth and why it is so important to keep them clean and healthy. They talked about brushing twice a day, using the correct techniques, and making healthy food choices. Every child received their own toothbrush and toothpaste and is very excited to show you what they learned at home!

It has been a week full of curiosity, creativity, and new experiences, and the children have thrown themselves into their learning with enthusiasm.
