    Islands Reflect & Review

27 February 2026 (by Stefan Mitsis (Stefan))

The first week back has been very successful, and the children have returned to school ready to learn and ready to spread lots of joy in Islands.

It has been wonderful to see how quickly they have settled back into routines, showing enthusiasm, focus, and positivity across their learning.

The children have continued their exciting adventure in Australia, this time with a stronger geography focus. They explored where Australia is located on both a world map and globe, identifying that it is part of the continent of Australia/Oceania. The children were fascinated to learn that it takes around 24 hours to travel by plane from the UK to Australia, helping them understand just how far away it is from where we live. The children also learned about all seven continents of the world, comparing their sizes and discussing which are the largest and smallest. This helped them build a clearer picture of how Australia fits into the wider world.

We have also been exploring the important difference between weather and climate. The children discussed how weather can change day to day, while climate describes patterns over a longer period of time. They compared what the climate is like in different parts of Australia and how this differs from the UK and other places around the world. The children asked thoughtful questions and showed growing confidence using new geographical vocabulary.

Next week is assessment week, where the children will have opportunities to show what they know across key areas of learning. These assessments help adults in school understand where each child is currently working and what the important next steps will be to support their progress. We always aim to keep this low-pressure and positive for the children.

A reminder that our exciting Didgeridoo Workshop will take place on Thursday 5th March. Letters were sent home a few weeks ago — if you have not yet returned the permission slip and payment, please do so as soon as possible so your child can take part in this fantastic experience.

We are very proud of how positively the children have started the term and look forward to another busy week ahead.
