    Islands Reflect & Review

14 March 2026 (by Zenith Zespinoza (Zenith))

It has been another engaging week in Islands as we have been historians, exploring the monarchy and the Commonwealth!

This week in our learning we explored the monarchy and learned about the role of the King as Head of State. The children learned that King Charles III is the King of the United Kingdom and discussed what a monarchy means.

The class also learned about the Commonwealth of Nations and what the Commonwealth is. They discovered that Australia is one of the countries in the Commonwealth and shares historical links with the United Kingdom. The children looked at maps to find where Australia is located and discussed how countries around the world can be connected.

During the lesson, the children used historical evidence such as pictures, maps and symbols (including crowns and flags) to help them develop their ideas. They discussed what these sources can tell us about monarchies and how different countries are linked.

By the end of the lesson, the children were able to explain who the King is, describe what a monarchy means, understand what the Commonwealth is, and use simple historical evidence to support their ideas.

Next week, we will be moving into D&T, where the children will be making their own portable snacks.

    Have a lovely weekend,

    Islands Team
