Islands Reflect & Review22 May 2026 (by Stefan Mitsis (Stefan)) |
What a wonderful way to finish the term! The children have worked incredibly hard throughout the week and should be very proud of all they have achieved. It has been fantastic to see their enthusiasm for learning continue right up until the end of term.
As mathematicians, the children have been exploring fractions. They have been identifying and finding fractions of shapes and quantities, using practical resources and visual representations to support their understanding. The children have developed their confidence in recognising halves, quarters, and thirds, while also discussing how equal parts are essential when working with fractions. It has been lovely to see them using mathematical vocabulary accurately and explaining their reasoning to their peers.
As writers, the children have been bringing their work on The Jolly Postman to a close. Throughout this unit, they have explored a range of writing techniques and text types inspired by the story, including letters, persuasive writing, and storytelling. This week, they have been finalising and editing their work, thinking carefully about how to improve their writing and make it engaging for the reader. The children have shown great imagination and pride in their work, and it has been wonderful to see how much their confidence as writers has grown.
As scientists, the children have been learning about plants and seeds. They explored how seeds grow into plants and investigated the different ways seeds can travel from one place to another. The children were introduced to scientific vocabulary such as dispersal, germination, and seedling, and they enjoyed discussing how wind, animals, water, and gravity can help seeds spread. Through observation and enquiry, they began to understand the important role seed dispersal plays in helping plants survive and grow in new places.
It has been a fantastic term filled with creativity, curiosity, and hard work. We are incredibly proud of everything the children have achieved and the progress they have made. We hope you all have a wonderful break and look forward to welcoming everyone back for another exciting term of learning.
